The Kojak Project
Album & Brand Redesign
The Kojak Project is a passion project of mine and my DJ persona. I have a love for dance music and house music and I enjoy the all challenges that come with being a DJ! I have been Inspired by international artists and DJs from Europe, the United States, and around the world. Defected Records and their artists have had a big impact on expanding my knowledge of music and reinforcing the concepts of inclusion and love across the spectrum.
During lockdown, like many others, I looked for a way to connect with others. I began DJing, mixing, and sharing my mixes online. I came up the Kojak persona based on my childhood nickname. I began posting music on SoundCloud as Project Kojak, and later - The Kojak Project.
The original album artwork I used for posts were simple and playful, centered around an old image of myself in the sink as a baby. As time went on, I felt the need to mature the artwork and come up with a more professional look to use for posting on Instagram and SoundCloud. I also wanted people to see who I was, so they could feel a stronger connection.
As you will see below, I was able to completely change the artwork and create a more modern and up-to-date look to use for brand recognition and posts. The new album art will be used to announce new SoundCloud music and mixes on various social media channels.
Above you can see the previous style and artwork used on SoundCloud when new mixes were posted. Although clear and effective, the look felt dated and "homemade," perhaps. The basic template was used with each post. Color changes were made to reflect the theme of the music or mix, but not much else changed with each posting.
Posting to SoundCloud alone was proving to be a great way to share music, but lacked the visibility to gain listeners and followers. I wanted to rebrand the image of The Kojak Project and have a theme and professional look that I could post to Instagram for more exposure.
(Above) I created a simple style sheet that included colors, text, and fonts. I created a header along with a professional but friendly photo. The background was removed and color blocks of various opacities and text assets were created. Once I was satisfied with the pieces and user information, I pulled everything together.
(Below) Here is the first mockup of what the new Kojak Project posts will look like.
(Below) A full mockup was created to simulate an Instagram post. Below you can see the assets created. Avatars were created, emojis and status bars were inserted. This gave a very realistic look at how a published post would appear on Instagram.
Now that I have completed the the redesign and branding for The Kojak Project, I plan to fully implement to new style upon my next music posting. I am very happy with the outcome and feel that I now have the visuals to match the music information I am presenting to my audience and the package needed to have a more professional Instagram presence.
