Masking & Layering
Masking and layering can be used in a number of ways and applications. Below are a few quick examples of how I have used masking and layering to create new assets for mockups, logos, and graphics.
Being resourceful and being able to come up with solutions while using my imagination is something I enjoy!
In this first example above I needed to create avatars for an Instagram (IG) post mockup. The post was a music post, so the avatars had to be music-related. I sourced the images from BBC Radio personalities and used Defected Records' logo. The result was the appearance that this Instagram music post mockup was being liked and followed by high people in the industry!
Above, the challenge was to create an alternate logo for Ralls Construction. During the website redesign a number of elements and pages needed a refresh including the logo.
I took the original logo and one of the classic images from the existing site and incorporated them together using a mask. The result is a familiar combination of the two elements.
In the finder Magazine example above, you will see a simple method I used to create layers and depth to the magazine cover that can help capture the readers' attention. Removing the background of the primary image and deciding how to subtly re-layer it with the cover could be done in a number of ways. In this case, I decided to keep the main text ("HVAR") centered with the image layer slightly obscuring it. The Travel sticker is also textured and layered near the top title text.
This method is a creative way to keep the magazine covers fresh and simple without losing the focus of the topic.
